Your fingernails are exposed to a great deal of daily wear and tear. This constant abuse can damage your nails and lead to breakage or splitting. This problem is even worse if you have weak nails due to genetics. Follow these steps to strengthen your nails and prevent problems in the future. See your doctor if your nail condition does not improve or if you have extreme nail abnormalities, as these may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Step 1

Remove your nail polish with a non-acetone remover. Acetone is a harsh chemical that can dry out your nails, which makes them weaker. You can still paint your nails as usual; in fact, polish may help your nails retain moisture. Use a moisturizing formula for best results.

Step 2

Take a vitamin supplement containing biotin. According to MayoClinic.com, biotin increases nail thickness and strength. Alternatively, eat a biotin-rich diet that includes egg yolks, nuts, beans, cauliflower and bananas.

Step 3

Eat a diet rich in protein, vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C , calcium and iron. Columbia University health services state that this combination of vitamins and minerals prevents a range of nail problems, including fragility, peeling and weakness.

Step 4

Soak your nails in water or oil before trimming, then apply moisturizer. Trim your nails so that they are short and squared, as longer nails are more likely to crack. Moisturize your nails and cuticles on a daily basis.

Step 5

Protect your nails from the environment. Do not soak them in detergent for long periods of time; wear gloves when doing the dishes or washing clothes by hand. Wear gloves in cold weather and while gardening.

Tips and Warnings

  • Avoid nail spas and salons. The implements and polishes used contain harsh chemicals and, possibly, bacteria.
  • Never remove your cuticles or pull at hangnails. Both actions cause harm to live skin tissue and can lead to nail infections.
