Put some kick in your child's swimming adventures with a set of swim fins. Whether they're used for paddling around the local pool or jetting ahead of opponents in a swimming competition, a set of flippers is bound to heighten water fun. Swim fins boost the efficiency of the kicking motion, propelling swimmers through the water faster. They also improve swimming form, helping kids maintain a horizontal, fish-like position. Throw in the health benefits--increased ankle flexibility, leg muscle strengthening and cardiovascular conditioning--and the only question left about swim fins is which ones you should choose.
Step 1
Purchase small blades with blunt, rounded ends that are easy to maneuver, if your child's age and experience level falls into the beginner category. Opt for a split flipper slit into two smaller sections if your child is an experienced swimmer looking to improve his speed. Select long, large blades if you are introducing your child to snorkeling or scuba diving.
Step 2
Select a full-foot pocket, which covers the foot like a slipper, if the swim fins are for one child and you're concerned about the fins staying on the child's feet. Locate an open-heel design that encloses only the front portion of the foot if more than one child will use the fins or if you want a pair that can be adjusted as your child grows.
Step 3
Check the durability of the straps and buckles that secure the fins in place if they are open-heel pocket fins. Pass on fins made from flimsy materials that won't hold up to active play. Test also the texture and flexibility of the fins. Choose fins made from softer materials for beginners.
Step 4
Have your child try the fins on and walk around in them whenever possible. Check the fit to ensure that the fins are snug but not too tight. Try another pair or a different design if the fins don't stay in place, are difficult to put on and take off or if they are too large to walk in.
Step 5
Review manufacturer information before completing the purchase. Don't purchase swim fins that are above or below the recommended age requirements for your child. Check to see if the swim fin coloring is permanent or non-permanent, as non-permanent colors may bleed, discoloring decks and pool surfaces. Check the warranty and return policy.
