Bouffant and beehive hairstyles rose to popularity in the 1960s when sky-high hair became the fashion. To create a bouffant, you need some knowledge about backcombing hair, which requires little more than a teasing comb and lots of hairspray to create a puffed and stiff appearance. Once you have backcombed the crown of your hair, you can shape it into a sophisticated updo or leave your hair loose for a more casual look.
Step 1
Apply a volumizing spray to wet hair, focusing on the roots. Using this spray helps to increase the size of the hair follicle, giving your hair more fullness at the roots. This added fullness can increase the puffy appearance of your finished bouffant.
Step 2
Flip your head over and dry your hair upside down, according to Beauty Editor. Rub your fingers through your hair and lift the hair away from the roots, focusing the hair dryer nozzle at the roots. This will help to lift the roots even further and give your hair more volume. If possible, you should dry the hair until it is about 80 percent dry, then allow it to air-dry completely. Be mindful that backcombing wet hair can damage it.
Step 3
Separate your hair into 3 sections. The first section should begin at the hairline and extend 1 to 2 inches back from the hairline; this will be the hair you smooth over your backcombed hair. Clip it into place so it stays out of your way. Next, separate the middle section, which is the part you will backcomb. Finally, separate the back section of hair and secure with a hair clip if needed. You'll style this part later.
Step 4
Free the backcombing section. Separate a 1-to-2-inch section and comb it with your teasing comb. Lift up the hair and spray a small amount of hairspray at the roots. Place the comb at the ends of the hair and comb down toward your scalp in a fast stroke. Repeat this motion 2 additional times. If you achieve the desired amount of volume, you have successfully backcombed.
Step 5
Continue backcombing in small sections of hair until you have combed enough hair to achieve your bouffant hairstyle.
Step 6
Release the top section of hair and smooth it over your backcombed portions of hair. You may need to use some bobby pins to secure stray sections of hair into place. Use hairspray to set your desired style into place.
