Parents can and should be teachers and coaches to their children. Helping your child reach his full potential in life is part of your job as a caring parent. Don't rush the process or pressure your child. According to Education.com, children should learn to manage their time and learn persistence, as some goals will require more work than others.

Step 1

Work on creating a bond with your child. According to HealthyChild.com, children who are nurtured are happier and more accomplished because they feel loved and sure of who they are. Having the respect and encouragement of a parent helps a child feel more secure when pursuing his interests.

Step 2

Help your child set goals, no matter his age. According to Education.com, children can start setting goals at any age. Goals don't have to be big, either. If your child would love to become part of the swimming team, the first goal might be to learn how to swim or to improve his breaststroke.

Step 3

Work with your kids to figure out how to achieve their goals. Map out the steps. Make sure you are a facilitator, rather than the person doing the work. That way, your child will feel a sense of accomplishment as he completes something.

Step 4

Encourage children to try new things. Fostering creativity is important for a child's development, according to Education.com. You should also urge children to pursue other interests, including those that require spending time outdoors or trying new things.
