Whether you are a circus performer, a construction worker finishing drywall or someone who just wants to feel tall, stilts will do the trick. Stilts are available in a range of sizes and styles that accommodate walking and even running and jumping. Learning to use stilts is not difficult but takes some practice, preparation and coordination. An appropriate spot to put on your stilts, a support of some type, a good friend to spot you in case you fall and your stilts are all you need to get started.
Step 1
Ask someone to spot you. Choose a person strong enough to support your weight while you are on the stilts and who can assist you safely, if you fall.
Step 2
Find a location high enough to sit on to put on your stilts. Secure your feet and leg straps so they are snug, but not tight.
Step 3
Stand up in the stilts and steady yourself against a wall, rope or other support. Set your feet approximately shoulder width apart. Point your feet forward and walk on your heels. Lift your legs from the thigh, bending at the knees. Avoid lifting your legs more than 6 inches off the ground.
Step 4
Practice walking on the stilts using a wall or a rope strung between two supports. These will help you steady yourself while you learn to use your stilts. Begin by simply walking in place to familiarize yourself with wearing the stilts.
Step 5
Take your first steps along the wall or rope, as you become more comfortable with standing and moving. Ensure your spotter is aware and ready to assist you, if needed. Avoid leaning too far forward. When you get to the end of the wall or rope, pivot on one foot and walk back in the opposite direction.
Step 6
Take a few steps away from the support, as you gain confidence. Have your spotter stand a little way from you and walk toward the spotter. Once you are comfortable walking, move about with your spotter following you. Return to your original position to rest or remove your stilts.
