Bicycle handlebar grips are typically made of foam or rubber and are designed to give you a safe and comfortable place to rest your hands while riding. Bicycles come complete with handlebar grips from the factory, but if they become damaged or you don't like them, putting on new ones is always an option. You can put on handlebar grips a couple of ways, and the process is straightforward.

Step 1

Loosen your brake levers and move them toward the middle of the handlebars.

Step 2

Wedge a flat screwdriver into the end of the handlebar grip and pry the edge up. Insert the nozzle of a spray lubricant and spray it under the grip, according to BicycleTutuor.com. Twist the grips back and forth and slide them off.

Step 3

Wipe down the handlebars with a clean towel to remove any trace of the lubricant.

Step 4

Spray hairspray on the handlebars and inside the new grips. Slide them on the bars while they are still wet. Once dried, the hairspray will help keep the handlebar grips in place. Replace your brake levers once the grips are where you want them.

Step 5

Pour soapy water on the handlebars and inside the handlebar grips if the grips are made of foam. Slide the grips on when the soapy solution is still wet. Wait for one day after you put them on to ride your bike so the soap has a chance to dry.

Tips and Warnings
