Essential oil bath salts call upon the healing properties of Epsom salts and the soothing, relaxing properties of essential oils to create a pleasurable bath experience. Even though fancy boutique bath salts have high prices and come in designer packages, they're all basically made from the same simple ingredients. Not only does making bath salts at home save you money, it also allows you to customize your salt's fragrance and healing qualities. Homemade bath salts also make thoughtful gifts.

Step 1

Add 4 cups Epsom salts to a large, non-reactive bowl, such as glass or plastic. Avoid metal bowls.

Step 2

Pour in 1 1/2 cups chunky, coarse sea salt. Stir lightly to combine.

Step 3

Add up to 15 drops of your favorite essential oils in any combination. Choose lavender, roman chamomile or sandalwood to help you relax and fight stress, suggests AromaWeb. Grapefruit, rose, neroli and bergamot oils promote happiness.

Step 4

Add a few drops of food coloring and stir. Add more coloring, one drop at a time, until you're satisfied with your color.

Step 5

Add 1/2 cup soap flakes if you'd like the bath salts to also create bubbles or to clean the skin. Soap flakes are usually made from mild castile soap and are available in drugstores.

Step 6

Portion the salts into decorative containers to keep or give as gifts. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per bath. Store in a cool, dry place. The salts will keep indefinitely.
