Treadmill belts, sometimes referred to as mats, revolve around the pulleys and platform of the machine at high rotations per minute. Stress is added to this process when an individual runs on the belt, creating greater friction between the mat and the platform. Over time, the lubrication applied to reduce friction gets worn away, creating less separation between the belt and the platform. If the lubrication completely disappears, this can ruin both the belt and the platform and pose a hazard to treadmill users. For this reason, it's recommended that you lubricate your treadmill periodically--generally every three months or 150 miles, whichever comes first.
Step 1
Unplug the treadmill from its power source. This prevents the treadmill from starting up abruptly when you are working on it.
Step 2
Loosen the tension screws on the sides of the treadmill, making it easier to access the treadmill belt and get underneath it. This is where the lubrication will be applied to the treadmill.
Step 3
Wipe up any existing lubrication with a cleaning cloth--this will clear out the sediments that have deposited in the old lubrication. Place 1/2 oz. of lubrication in the middle of the platform underneath the treadmill belt.
Step 4
Replace the tension screws on the treadmill's sides, then step onto the treadmill. Set the walk speed at one mile per hour and proceed to walk over the middle of the treadmill belt for one minute.
Step 5
Step on the middle of the platform for the duration of your walk. This will spread out the lubrication underneath your belt and adequately lubricate the treadmill.
