Mesothelioma is cancer of the thin tissue surrounding a person's organs. According to the American Cancer Society, between 2,000 and 3,000 people are diagnosed with the rare condition each year. A cause of the cancer has not been discovered; however, the main risk factor for the disease remains asbestos exposure.
Types
The most common form of mesothelioma surrounds the lungs and is known as pleural malignant mesothelioma. The remaining three types affect tissue around the abdomen, heart and testicles.
Time Frame
Mesothelioma does not occur until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos conditions, according to MedlinePlus. Most people diagnosed with the cancer are between 40 and 60 years old.
Treatments
Removal of the cancerous tissue is a surgical option, if the mesothelioma is diagnosed at an early stage. Surgeons may also decrease the amount of fluids in the chest cavity. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are other treatment options. Combination therapy works best but may not be appropriate for everyone, according to MayoClinic.com.
