Split ends are the result of wear and tear from dry weather, coloring, perms and overuse of heated styling appliances. Although the hair follicle contains living tissue, the hair shaft consists of cells that are no longer living, so unlike living tissue, these cannot be healed, says "Exploratorium" magazine. Caring for split ends involves repairing the damage as much as possible while you wait for new, healthy hair to take its place.

Step 1

Trim your hair regularly. Cutting the hair just above the split is the only sure way to remove split ends, advises "Marie Claire" magazine. A light trim every four weeks will keep split ends under control without requiring a drastic change in hair length.

Step 2

Use a moisturizing shampoo for dry hair and condition your hair after every shampoo. Use a conditioner containing keratin protein or echinacea, which will seal split ends and coat the hair shaft, suggests "Cosmopolitan" magazine.

Step 3

Use heated styling tools sparingly. Avoid using curling irons or flat irons more than twice weekly. Direct the nozzle of your blow dryer to the roots and middle section of your hair and away from the hair ends. Use heated styling tools on the low setting and avoid excessive heat.

Step 4

Deep condition your hair once every week, advises North Carolina State University. Use a commercial treatment or a homemade deep conditioner made of honey, eggs or yogurt.

Combine an egg yolk with 1 tsp. natural honey and 3 tbsp. olive oil. Massage the mixture into your hair, and then top it with a plastic shower cap. Wash your hair after 30 minutes. Alternatively, massage olive oil into your split ends and wash the oil out the next morning, notes Fat Free Kitchen.
