Aftershave balm offers cooling relief from the irritation of shaving. It is especially beneficial to those who suffer from dry skin or razor bumps because it hydrates and soothes the skin. Most aftershave balms contain some combination of aloe, lanolin and vitamin E, and balms are available both with and without fragrance. Hudson's FTM Resource Guide recommends choosing a moisturizing aftershave balm that is labeled as "non-comedogenic" if you suffer from dry or acne-prone skin.
Step 1
Shave your face using a sharp, clean blade and plenty of shaving gel. Avoid shaving over the same area multiple times and be careful not to nick or cut your skin.
Step 2
Rinse your face well with warm water to remove any remaining shaving gel. Once your skin is clean, follow the warm rinse with a splash of cold water to soothe your skin and close your pores.
Step 3
Gently pat your face dry with a soft, clean towel. Do not rub your freshly shaved face, as doing so can cause skin irritation and increase dryness.
Step 4
Apply aftershave balm to your beard area by gently rubbing it into your skin with the pads of your fingers. Use only as much as needed to coat and moisturize your skin. If the skin on your face is dry, it may be beneficial to massage a small amount of balm into the rest of your face.
Tips and Warnings
- Alcohol-based aftershaves are very drying and may cause irritation in those with sensitive skin.
- Drugs.com warns that aftershave balms containing isopropyl or ethyl alcohol are toxic if ingested. Keep aftershave products out of the reach of children, and contact the National Poison Control Center immediately if ingestion occurs.
