Hair is constantly in a growing state on your body, making regular hair removal necessary on areas of your body where you don't want it to grow. Although a razor is one of the least expensive and most common ways to remove this hair, shaving takes time, and many people deal with razor-related skin issues such as ingrown hairs or shaving bumps. Luckily, there are several other options on the market that can help you remove unwanted hair.

Step 1

Apply an adhesive waxing strip to the hair. Waxing pulls the hair from the hair root by applying an adhesive solution to the hair-filled area, placing a strap or other piece of material over the top, and then literally ripping the strip from the skin, taking the adhesive and hair with it.

Step 2

Apply a chemical depilatory to weaken the keratin bonds in your hair strands. Chemical depilatories are lotions or creams that contain active ingredients, such as calcium thioglycolate and calcium hydroxide, which when applied to the skin weaken the hair. After the prescribed amount of time--determined by the package of your product--you can scrape the hair from your skin with the included spatula or wipe it away with a towel or washcloth.

Step 3

Schedule a laser hair removal session. Laser hair removal uses the melanin pigment in your hair to directly target a burst of laser light energy into the hair follicle, which destroys the hair bulb. Without the hair bulb the follicle is unable to produce new hair strands, and the old hair strand falls out. Usually several treatments are necessary, states the Mayo Clinic, in order to treat each hair follicle in its growth phase.

Step 4

Schedule a session with an electrolysis professional. Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal option that targets your hair follicles with an electrical pulse. A needle-like device is inserted into each follicle during this treatment in order to deliver the pulse. The pulse damages the hair bulb, making it impossible to grow new hair strands.

Tips and Warnings

  • When employing laser hair removal or electrolysis, always insure the person performing the treatment is a trained and certified professional.
  • When using a chemical depilatory, use the product for the least amount of time possible for results. This will help reduce potentially serioius side effects, such as chemical burns.
