How to Remove Dark Circles From the Under Eye Area

No one wants dark circles under the eyes because they make you look exhausted and put years on your appearance. Dark circles are the result of allergies, crying, sun exposure, smoking, drinking or hereditary causes. They are a lot like bruises in that the capillaries under your skin get damaged and broken and blood leaks into your tissue. When the hemoglobin in your blood starts to degrade, the circles under your eyes take on a bluish dark tint. The key to removing dark circles from under your eyes is to eat right, use the right treatments on your eyes and get your rest.

Step 1

Get enough sleep. When you don't sleep enough at night, your body cannot recuperate from the damage you do to it every day. Your dark circles look much worse when you don't get your rest. The National Sleep Foundation says you need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep every night. If this is not feasible for you, take a 15-minute nap at some point during your busy day.

Step 2

Place two tea bags over your eyes to remove dark circles. Tea contains a high level of epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, which helps lighten the dark color beneath your eyes. EGCG is an anti-inflammatory chemical. Boil a pot of water, brew your tea, then drain and let the two tea bags cool. Place one over each eye while you lie on the couch. Leave on your eyes for about 10 minutes.

Step 3

Place an ice pack over your eyes. The cold from the ice pack will help calm your dark circles. While this method works wonders to remove the dark circles under your eyes, be aware that its effects are temporary. Lie down on your couch and place the ice pack over your eyes for about 15 minutes.

Step 4

Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies contain a high amount of vitamin C, which will help make your skin cells grow faster, replacing the damaged cells that make the skin under your eyes damaged and dark. Eat a serving of fruits and veggies with every meal, such as oranges, bananas and spinach.

Step 5

Drink plenty of water. If you are dehydrated, your body wants to hold on to the water it does have because it doesn't know when you will hydrate it again. This causes your eyes to form dark circles. The Mayo Clinic says you should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day.
