How Is Herpes Simplex 2 Transmitted?
Statistics
According to the Centers for Disease Control, Herpes Simplex 2 (HSV-2) infects about one-fourth of women in the United States, and approximately one-fifth of all adults and adolescents over 12 are infected with either herpes simplex 1 or 2. Most genital herpes is caused by herpes simplex 2, and the infection can stay in the body for an indefinite time.
Direct Contact
In most cases, herpes simplex 2 is transmitted via sexual contact with an infected person. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the herpes virus moves through bodily fluids such as semen, saliva and fluid in the female genitals as well as through fluids from an open herpes sore.
Undiagnosed Carriers
A partner may be infected with herpes simplex 2 and not be aware of the fact, as outbreaks of sores are often rare and there are no other symptoms. While transmission may occur through a herpes sore, an infected sexual partner does not have to have a sore to be contagious.
Myths
The Mayo Clinic states that despite popular belief, the HSV-2 does not survive outside the body, and it's almost impossible for one to get herpes simplex 2 from non-sexual contact such as from towels, toilets or other objects that have come in contact with an infected person.
