If you participate in a sport that includes striking with the fists then hand wraps are an essential piece of equipment for safety and effectiveness. Hand wraps can be described as a long strip of cloth that is secured around the wrists, palms and knuckles of a fist. Hand wraps will maintain a straight wrist to prevent bone breakage and fractures. They also protect the knuckles and keep at risk bones and ligaments in place
Step 1
Place your thumb through the loop at the end of the hand wrap. Spread your hand open and lay the wrap over the back of your hand.
Step 2
Wrap the hand wrap tightly around the wrist two to three times. Be sure to maintain a consistently tight wrap throughout the process to provide the best support. However, it is also important not to wrap too tightly or else you risk cutting off circulation to the hand.
Step 3
Take the hand wrap from the front palm side of the hand and wrap it around the back of your thumb in between the thumb and index finger once.
Step 4
Wrap the hand wrap around your wrist once to lock in the wrap around your thumb. Proceed to wrap it around your thumb two more times for increased stability. Follow up the two wraps by wrapping the hand wrap around the wrist twice more to lock these wraps in place.
Step 5
Wrap across your knuckles three times. A buffer between what you are striking and your knuckles will help to prevent knuckle bruising and dislocation. Wrap once around the wrist to lock these wraps around the knuckle in place.
Step 6
Take the wrap from the base of the thumb and bring it in between the index and middle finger.
Step 7
Take the wrap from the base of the thumb and bring it in between the middle and ring finger.
Step 8
Take the wrap from the base of the thumb and bring it in between the ring finger and pinky finger. By wrapping in between the fingers you will help prevent the knuckles from dislocation and help to keep them in place for stronger striking.
Step 9
Wrap the hand wrap two additional times across the knuckles.
Step 10
Finish wrapping by reinforcing the wrist. Wrap across the wrist until you reach the end of the hand wrap. Secure the wrap using velcro or strong tape.
Tips and Warnings
- Maintain consistency throughout the wrapping process. If a wrap is too tight or too loose, it will not be effective and you should start over.
