Location
The small community of Schurz, Nevada, is located in western Nevada, southeast of Carson City. Visitors can access the area by taking State Highway 95, south of Interstate 80.
Preparing for Your Trip
If you plan to fish in Nevada, you'll need a Nevada state fishing license. Obtain a license at sporting good stores or at bait and tackle shops in Carson City. Temperatures near Schurz get hot in the summer, so carry plenty of water to keep hydrated. Bring sunscreen and hats to protect your skin from sunburn.
Historical Park Activities
The Fort Churchill State Historic Park is one place to explore, hike and camp. Built in 1861, the fort protected the settlers, but was abandoned nine years later. Explore the decaying buildings, but don't climb on the fragile adobe ruins. Stop at the visitor center to see artifacts from the fort. Walk to nearby Buckland Station, a Pony Express stop and former hotel built in 1870. For hiking, take the Carson River Ranches trailhead as it meanders along the river. The trail connects Fort Churchill with Lahontan State Recreation area. You can also canoe or kayak on the river as you paddle your way to Lahontan.
Lake Activities
Walker Lake, located south of Schurz, offers fishing, boating and swimming. According to the Nevada Division of State Parks, Walker Lake is a remnant of an ancient inland sea that covered most of western Nevada about 10,000 years ago. Nowadays, the lake offers year-round recreation. You'll find a boat launch for putting in your motor boat, canoe or kayak. You can also swim along the sandy beaches or enjoy a picnic using the tables and grills located near the beach. The park also includes shade ramadas so you can take a break from the sun.
Walker River Adventure
Explore outdoor activities along the Walker River with a visit to the Walker River Resort. The resort is located on the old townsite of Hudson, located just west of Schurz. The resort arranges float trips down the river and also features two sporting clays courses so you can test your shooting skills. Fly fishing is available in the river along the resort, or you can head to nearby Wilson Canyon to try your luck for trout. Rockhounding is popular in the canyon, where petrified wood and agates are the most common finds.
ATV Trails
The Nevada Bureau of Land Management offers thousands of acres for riding ATVs. Access some of the trails near Schurz by parking at the Weed Heights Park grounds or along the highway rest area south of Yerington. Try the 18-mile Pine Grove Trail that follows dirt roads the whole route.
