Snoring is a common problem that can create a lot of complications, especially when sharing a room with someone or when it is a symptom of sleep apnea. Snoring occurs when tissues at the top of your airways vibrate and hit each other as your airway becomes partially blocked during sleep. With snoring being a common problem, many devices have been introduced to the market in order to treat the issue.
Step 1
Apply adhesive nasal strips to the sides of your nose. Adhesive snoring strips can be found in most drug stores and convenient stores and work by forcing the nasal cavity open, increasing the amount of space within the cavity. The extra space helps reduce problems with snoring.
Step 2
Wear a customized dental mouthpiece designed by a dental specialist to reduce snoring. A dental mouthpiece opens the soft palate and advances the position of your tongue. This helps force the air passage open to reduce the drag associated with snoring.
Step 3
Use a CPAP machine. CPAP machines, or continuous positive airway pressure machines, are pressurized masks that you place over your face as you sleep. The mask pushes air into your mouth, forcing open the airways. Talk to your doctor about whether a CPAP machine is right for you.
Step 4
Have your doctor inject a palatal implant device into your soft palate. Palatal implants consist of braided polyester filaments that are injected into the soft palate of your mouth. The filaments are firm, which stiffens the structure of the soft palate to reduce snoring.
Tips and Warnings
- You can also help reduce snoring through non-device methods such as sleeping on your side or losing weight if you are overweight or obese.
- When choosing a dental appliance for snoring, the Mayo Clinic recommends scheduling a dental appointment at least once every six months for the first year to prevent side effects and ensure the device is fitting correctly.
