To prepare for saltwater fly-fishing, first decide on the type of saltwater fish to target. Then select and set up an appropriate fly-fishing rod. For example, you can take sea trout on a relatively light rod. Tarpon, however, require heavier and larger gear. Also, ensure the fly-fishing rod and reel are rated for saltwater fishing. This will help to combat the corrosive effects of salt water. Finally, take the time to carefully prepare your rod with the appropriate lines and knots. Set up properly, your fly-fishing rod will serve you well for years of saltwater fishing.

Step 1

Assemble your fly rod and secure your fly-fishing reel to the rod. Ensure both are in proper working order.

Step 2

Use an arbor knot to tie your backing line to the fly reel. Make a large bend in the end of your backing. Use the end of the line to tie an overhand knot around the main portion of the line. Tie another overhand knot closer to the end of the line and tighten both knots.

Step 3

Place the bend around the spool on the reel and pull it tight. Wind around 200 yards of backing line onto the reel.

Step 4

Select a good-quality, weight-forward fly line. This type of line helps to cast heavier saltwater lures more easily in strong winds and big water.

Step 5

Attach the fly line to the backing with an Albright knot. Make a loop in the end of the backing line. Insert the end of the fly line through the loop and wrap it around the loop seven or eight times, working back toward the bend in the loop. Insert the fly line through the loop in the backing line and pull the knot tight. Trim the excess line.

Step 6

Wind the fly line evenly onto the reel.

Step 7

Connect the leader to the fly line with a nail knot. Place a nail next to the end of the fly line. Lay the leader line along the nail. Wrap it around the nail and the fly line six times, wrapping toward the leader. Carefully remove the nail and slip the end of the leader into the space where the nail was. Pull the knot tight and trim any excess line.

Step 8

Thread the leader and fly-fishing line through the guides in the rod.

Step 9

Fold the end of the leader back to form a bend. Insert the bend through the hook eye on the fly. Fold the bend back and use it to tie an overhand knot on the main line. Slip the loop in the bend over the fly and tighten the knot. Trim any excess line.

Step 10

Hook the fly onto the hook keeper and wind the line up until you are ready to use your rod.
