Massaging the scalp stimulates the blood vessels in the head and relieves tension, sends new blood to the hair follicles and helps to eliminate free radicals. According to Care Fair, a scalp massage is easy to perform on yourself. You don't need a professional to do either a massage when your hair is dry or with oils to saturate the roots and give your hair additional nutrients.

Step 1

Apply oil to your fingers if your hair is dry to lubricate your scalp and treat your hair to additional conditioning. Work the oil on to your head at the roots and pull your fingers through the ends of your hair to spread the oil. Leave the oil on for up to an hour to allow it to penetrate the follicles and the hair shafts.

Step 2

Start at the front of your scalp. Work your way over the top and sides of your head using your fingertips. If you have long nails, lay your fingers down so the pads of your fingers connect with your scalp. Anchor your hands with your thumbs and include circular thumb motions on the sides of your head. In addition to soothing the scalp and giving you healthier hair, a scalp massage can help to relieve tension headaches.

Step 3

Work your fingers in small circles over your head. Slowly move your fingers in a circular motion and spend extra time on areas that are particularly tense or tight. Move your fingers to the sides and end at the back of your head. Massage your scalp without oil anytime during the day to relieve tension and keep the natural oils flowing.

Step 4

Wash away the oil and grime and toxins that you released with the light rubbing. Work the shampoo into a lather by rubbing your fingers over your scalp once more. Continue massaging your scalp through the rinse.

Step 5

Loosen dead skin with a soft brush, especially if you suffer from dandruff or any other skin condition such as dermatitis, advises the National Institutes of Health. Lightly push the brush onto your scalp and move it back and forth slightly over your entire head. Massage your scalp when your hair is dry and then use the brush to comb out the loosened skin and flakes. Wash your hair immediately after massaging to remove any excess flakes still present in your hair.

Tips and Warnings

  • Wrap your head in a towel while the oil is still on your head prior to showering. Wet the towel with warm water to give your hair an even healthier shine. When you're finished massaging, grab pieces of your hair and gently tug at your scalp to add to the tingling sensation that often accompanies a hair massage.
  • Keep your brush clean by rinsing it off after each dry massage so you won't reintroduce the dead skin cells and toxins back on your head when you use the brush again. Make sure your hands and fingernails are clean prior to giving yourself a scalp massage. Hair follicles open slightly with massage. Avoid infections and clogged pores by making sure your hands and any other tools you use are clean.
