Circular breathing is a technique used by musicians who play woodwind instruments such as the clarinet and saxophone. The object of circular breathing is to draw out a single note by breathing in through your nose, while at the same time continuing the flow of air through your instrument. Circular breathing is challenging and takes time and practice to master.

Step 1

Puff your cheeks out and continue to breathe normally through your nose.

Step 2

Place a straw into a glass of water, then place the straw between your lips. Keep your cheeks puffed out.

Step 3

Continue breathing through your noise, while allowing the air in your cheeks to blow bubbles in the water through the straw. Use your cheek muscles to force the air slowly out of your cheeks and into the straw. The bubbles should not stop.

Step 4

Blow bubbles with the air in your lungs once the air in your cheeks is gone. Puff your cheeks out once again and repeat the cycle.

Step 5

Practice the circular breathing technique with your instrument once you understand how it should "feel" to do it correctly.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice the circular breathing technique regularly.
