Inline skating is a popular activity used for exercise and transportation. For some skaters, inline skating provides the opportunity to perform several tricks. Among the tricks skaters perform on inline skates is the grind. A grind is performed by sliding your skates along an object, such as a pole, without using your wheels. Performing tricks on inline skates increases the danger of inline skating. Learn the proper grinding method before performing the trick.

Step 1

Locate a solid object, such as a metal pole, that is low to the ground. Choose an object that is approximately the size of a street sign pole. Use the edge of a curb if you are unable to find an appropriate object.

Step 2

Stand next to the object you are going to grind and place one skate on the object to get a feel for where how your skates should land on the object when grinding. Place your skate on the object between the second and third wheels. This portion of your skate allows for a proper grind.

Step 3

Skate toward the grinding object at an angle with moderate speed and bend your knees just before reaching the object to prepare for the jump. Moving too slow will make it more difficult to balance. Concentrate on the spot where you want to land on the object.

Step 4

Jump in the air, turn your body so your feet are perpendicular to the object, and land with both feet so the object sits between the second and third wheels, according to GrindSide.com. Center your weight to keep your balance when you are grinding. Grind in this manner until you near the end of the object.

Step 5

Leap off of the object near its end and turn your body in the direction of your momentum. Bend your knees when you hit the ground to help keep your balance and absorb the shock of hitting the ground.

Tips and Warnings

  • To reduce the risk of injury when first learning how to grind, set a metal pole up over grass. Set up the pole so it has a slight decline. From a standing position, leap onto the pole at its highest point from a standing position and grind down.
  • Wear full safety equipment when grinding, including a helmet, elbow pads and kneed pads, to prevent injury when inline skating.
