If you think store-bought gelatin is only good for shrimp molds and sweet, sticky desserts, you may be surprised to learn that the gelatin's firming capabilities can also serve as the base for numerous homemade face peels that can smooth and moisturize your skin. Numerous at-home facial peel recipes use the staying power of gelatin to help your skin soak up nutrients found in natural foods, teas and herbs to help alleviate red, flaky patches, smooth out wrinkled skin and moisturize dry, damaged skin.

Smoothing Skin Peel

Step 1

Puree 1/2 peeled, seeded and diced cucumber in a blender or food processor.

Step 2

Press cucumber puree through a piece of cheesecloth or paper towel over a cup or small bowl to remove the juice from the pulp.

Step 3

Discard cucumber puree and set the juice aside.

Step 4

Steep one green tea or chamomile tea bag in 1/2 cup boiling water for three to five minutes, then remove and discard tea bag.

Step 5

Add 1 tsp. unflavored gelatin to the tea and simmer on low for five to seven minutes, or until the gelatin completely dissolves, and remove from heat.

Step 6

Add cucumber juice and 1 tbsp. fresh aloe vera gel to the mixture and stir thoroughly.

Step 7

Let the mixture sit for 15 to 20 minutes, and then place mixture in refrigerator for 20 to 30 minutes, or until the mixture hardens into the texture of a gelatin dessert.

Step 8

Apply the smoothing skin peel to your face and neck with your fingers or a rubber spatula.

Step 9

Let the face peel sit for 25 to 30 minutes.

Step 10

Peel off the mask with your fingers and wash face as usual.

Moisturizing Peel

Step 1

Pour 2 tbsp. organic milk into a small saucepan and heat through.

Step 2

Add 1 tsp. plain gelatin to mix, simmer until the gelatin dissolves into the milk, and remove from heat.

Step 3

Add 1 tsp. organic honey to mixture and let sit for ten to 15 minutes, or until the mixture is near room temperature.

Step 4

Pour the mixture into a bowl and place in refrigerator for 20 minutes, or until the mixture feels firm yet pliable to the touch.

Step 5

Apply moisturizing peel to your face and let sit for 20 minutes.

Step 6

Use your fingertips to peel off the mask, and rinse your face with lukewarm water.
