The Chesapeake Bay Foundation tells us that the Chesapeake Bay supports 3,600 species of plant and animal life, including more than 300 fish species. One can reach a Bay tributary, notes the Foundation, in less than 15 minutes from nearly everywhere in the watershed (the areas of land draining to the shared destination of the Chesapeake Bay). If you are a fan of the Bay and fishing, there are several magazines that cover these interests in print and online.
Fishing for Facts
An obvious choice for keeping up with the Chesapeake Bay and its fishing activities is the Chesapeake Bay Magazine. This is a print magazine published monthly and it costs $26 for a year's subscription as of August 2010. Everything having to do with fishing and boating on the Chesapeake Bay makes up the content of this magazine and it regularly displays fishing and boating images on its front covers. It has an online component at Chesapeakeboating.net.
Life on the Bay
Another source of discovery about the Bay's sailing in the sun lifestyle is the magazine, Chesapeake Life. This publication provides information about Bay fishing and boating but has broader topic coverage that includes articles on travel, food, home and garden and life on the Bay in general. It is a quarterly publication in print and it costs $12 per year as of August 2010. It also has an online component at Chesapeakelifemag.com.
Environmental News
You can browse the Chesapeake Bay Journal for news about fishing in the Bay. However, this journal will provide more coverage of environmental issues related to the Chesapeake Bay, such as an article from the February 2010 issue titled, "Atlantic sturgeon under consideration for endangered species list." The journal reports a print circulation of 50,000 and is published monthly except for the midsummer and midwinter issues. It is distributed free of charge and you can be added to their mailing list by filling out a form online at Bayjournal.com.
Free Insights
There are a number of free magazines, both print and online, that cover news and activities about fishing on the Chesapeake. As the Chesapeake Bay Foundation reminds us, about 10 million people live along or near the shores of the Chesapeake Bay; combine that with visitors and tourists and you can see that advertising dollars will easily support the magazines that are offered for free. Some of these include the Bay Weekly, Chesapeake Angler Magazine, Chesapeake Current, PropTalk: Chesapeake Bay Powerboating and SpinSheet: Chesapeake Bay Sailing.
Fishing Reports
If you are already a seasoned fisherman and are mostly interested in finding out the seasonal and weekly conditions for fishing, there are online fishing and bay reports available for free. The Department of Natural Resources' Maryland Weekly Fishing Report advises on water temperature, the best times for fishing in the Bay, the type of fish you can expect to catch and where to catch them.
