If you subject your hair to repeated chemical procedures, such as coloring, bleaching or permanent waves, your hair may appear dry and brittle. Overuse of heat stylers and styling products that contain alcohol can also result in dry hair. Dryness eventually leads to breakage; a situation that can wreak havoc on your hair's overall style and appearance. Deep conditioning treatments can help add moisture to your hair and also strengthen the cuticle layer, restoring shine and manageability.
Step 1
Apply a quarter-sized amount of deep conditioner to the palm of your hand. Choose a moisturizing conditioner that contains humectants, which will draw moisture to your hair.
Step 2
Massage the deep conditioner into your hair and scalp using your fingertips. Your hair should be dry not wet. Cover your hair with a shower cap or wrap your hair in a towel.
Step 3
Allow the deep conditioner to sit on your hair for approximately 30 minutes.
Rinse the deep conditioner from your hair with a cool water rinse. Shampoo your hair as you normally would, using a moisturizing shampoo.
Step 4
Rinse the shampoo from your hair, completely. Apply a daily conditioner to your wet hair. Leave the daily conditioner on for 3 minutes and rinse again.
Step 5
Towel your hair dry, patting it gently with the towel. Style as usual. Repeat the deep conditioning process once a week.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have a dryer bonnet, sit under the dryer for the 30-minute deep conditioning period. The heat from the dryer will help the conditioner penetrate your hair's cuticle.
- Do not mistake deep conditioners for daily conditioners. Daily conditioners coat the hair, smoothing it temporarily. Unfortunately, these results only last until the next washing. Do not rub your hair with the towel. Rubbing your hair dry causes friction and damage to your already fragile hair ends.
