Elliptical machines, including those manufactured by Lifetime Fitness, can be found at most gyms. Many gym-goers find ellipticals to be a refreshing change from the standard treadmill workout. The pedaling motion of an elliptical machine is circular. Unlike on a treadmill, there is no impact as you move your feet. According to Edward Laskowski, M.D., from MayoClinic.com, working out on an elliptical machine is less stressful on your knees, back and hips. He also notes that you can pedal in reverse on an elliptical to change up your workout.
Step 1
Stand on the machine. Grab the handles for balance, then step on the foot pedals. Do not start pedaling.
Step 2
Select a manual workout. If you want to manually control your workout, press the "Quick Start" button. The workout begins at a low intensity level and doesn't change. Use the up and down arrow keys to increase or decrease the intensity level of the workout.
Step 3
Select a programmed workout. After you step on the elliptical, press one of the preprogrammed workout buttons. The machine will automatically adjust the intensity and resistance during the workout. Some of the workout options are Hill, Random, Cardio and Fat Burn.
Step 4
Enter your personal information. The screen will prompt you for various information including your age and weight. Use the keypad and arrow keys to select your answers and press enter.
Step 5
Start your workout. Place your hands over the heart rate sensors on the handles. Start pedaling both your arms and legs.
Tips and Warnings
