Jumping on a trampoline is a fun activity and also good exercise. Though the motion of the trampoline may feel awkward at first, eventually you will become comfortable and want to perform different tricks, such as a backflip. The idea of performing a backflip is scary to many people because they don't think they can pull off a complete rotation and land on their feet. By practicing the proper technique you can perform a backflip on the trampoline.
Step 1
Jump straight up and down near one edge of the trampoline with your back facing the opposite edge. Bend your knees when your feet hit the trampoline and extend them when you pop up. You don't have to jump high to perform a backflip, but practicing the proper jumping technique will prepare you for when you are ready to perform the trick. Standing near the edge of the trampoline will give you enough room in case you jump backwards.
Step 2
Bend your knees as deep as you can when your feet hit the trampoline when you decide to perform the backflip. Swing your arms straight back as far as they will go as you bend your knees. Concentrate on jumping straight up, and not backwards.
Step 3
Pop your legs straight up, swing your arms around and over your head and push your hips forward and up, according to TrampTricks.com. The motion of your arms and hips will help start the backwards rotation of the backflip. Leaning your head back will also help start the backwards rotation.
Step 4
Raise your knees up to your chest to help turn your body around. Start extending your legs once you are approximately 2/3 through the backflip rotation. Keep your eyes on the trampoline to know where you are going to land once your rotation is complete.
Step 5
Extend your arms forward as you land to maintain your balance on the trampoline. You should land in the same spot or a little behind where you started the backflip. Landing far back from where you started means you are jumping backwards at take off instead of straight up. Concentrate on jumping straight up and letting your arms and hips create the rotation.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a spotter when first learning to help you get past the fear of performing backflips on the trampoline. In addition, the spotter can help prevent injuries should you make a mistake with your technique.
- Use a safety net when possible to avoid falling off of the trampoline when performing a backflip. Do not jump on a wet trampoline. The material is very slick when wet and can cause injury.
