Hair growth can slow for a variety of reasons, such as certain medications, hair product build-up or illness. The key to increasing hair growth is all in the roots. The root of your hair is inside your hair follicle. You have thousands of hair follicles that line your scalp that make up your hair.

Diet

What you put into your body affects hair growth, or lack of hair growth. Your hair needs essential vitamins and nutrients to grow, just like your body. B-complex vitamins can help increase hair growth, as they are essential for normal cell function and growth.

Brewer's yeast is part of the vitamin B-complex group, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, but should not be confused with baking yeast. Brewer's yeast is rich in chromium, which is important for hair growth; baker's yeast contains very little chromium.

The recommended daily dose of brewer's yeast is 1 to 2 tbsp. per day. Brewer's yeast has a bitter taste. To reduce the bitterness, you can add it to food or mix it with water or juice. Alternatively, you can also take a good vitamin B-complex supplement or multivitamin that contains brewer's yeast.

Cut Your Hair

Cutting your hair can help it grow. When you have dead or split ends, it can impede hair growth. By cutting or trimming your hair, it helps remove dead hair and split ends to encourage hair growth, according to KidsHealth.org.

Prior to trimming your hair, explain to your hair stylist that you only want the bare minimum of dead and split ends cut off because you're trying to let it grow out. You can also ask the stylist to show you exactly how much she will be cutting off so you know that you're both on the same page.

Shampoo

Shampooing your hair does more than just make it clean. it can promote hair growth. Shampooing is an important process, because while it does cleanse your hair, it also cleanses away oils and styling products from your scalp.

Excess oil and styling product build-up, can also impede hair growth when hair follicles become clogged. By removing build-up of oils and hair styling products, it allows the follicle to receive more oxygen.

Shampooing your scalp can also increase circulation, which is vital to delivering nutrients to your hair that it needs to thrive. Clarifying shampoos contain stronger detergents than ordinary shampoos and work effectively to remove build-up, according to DermNet NZ.

Clarifying shampoos can have a harsh effect on your hair and scalp since the detergents used in them are so strong. DermNet NZ recommends only using clarifying shampoos about once per week.
