Hot stone massage techniques have enhanced the pure luxury and enjoyment of the massage experience. Hot stone massage involves placing warm stones on various body parts and moving the stones in ways to benefit the client. There are several methods involving the use of hot stones to help with relaxation, pain and overall well-being. Hot stone therapy has not been medically proven to treat any medical condition.

Petrissage

The Swedish massage method of Petrissage is used as a beginning warm-up and ending technique. This method uses the palms of the hands to transfer heat to the client's body, and hot stones facilitate this process, according to SearchWarp.com. Petrissage uses soft, kneading motions to move the underlying tissues. The recipient feels pampered and soothed. Hot stone massages, while believed to benefit many, have not been scientifically proven to treat any condition.

Effleurage

Effleurage is a Swedish method that allows the therapist to move freely over body parts and use different techniques. A flat, open palm or open fist is used to glide stones, oils and lotions over your body. While massaging, the therapist discovers muscular knots and warm or cold spots, and uses hot stones to assist in targeting these trouble areas. There is insufficient evidence to support massage therapy in the treatment of any aliment.

Ayurvedia

Ayurvedia hot stone massage has been used since ancient Indian times to promote healing and longevity by releasing tension and connecting the flow of prana, or vital energy, throughout the body. This massage method uses Ayurvedic herbal oils and various sized basalt stones, heated in water. The warm stones are placed on certain points on the body and a deep massage is given.

Shiatsu

Registered Shiatsu therapist Nicole Swierkowski says the ancient Japanese massage therapy began in Chinese medicine. It involves using acupressure to enhance physical, emotional and mental functioning. This technique can be used in conjunction with hot stones to enhance your experience. The Shiatsu therapist's palms, thumbs, feet, elbow and knees are used over the whole body to apply pressure. Although used for centuries to treat many conditions, massage therapy has not been proven effective by the medical community.

Tibetan Himalayan

Based on an ancient Tibetan medical text and the combined efforts of Tibetan doctors and certified acupuncturist and massage therapist Joanna Claire, this hot stone technique utilizes 48 hot stones plus oil and fragrant herbs to help release body tension. Hot stones are put on key points of the body to expand blood vessels and soothe the nervous system, according to Spavelous.com.
