Acidophilus, known also as lactobacillus acidophilus, is a bacteria made from lactic acid that is found naturally in the intestines and the vagina. Acidophilus regulates the amount of acid in the body and prevents the growth of unhealthy bacteria. Taken out of the bodily context and used as a supplement, acidophilus is a bacteria used to make yogurt and supplement probiotics.
Significance
Like some other herbs or supplements, acidophilus has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is used homeopathically. Anyone taking it should consult their doctor.
Common Uses
Acidophilus is commonly used to treat yeast or bacterial infections, urinary tract infections, candida infections, gastrointestinal disorders, antibiotic-induced diarrhea, high cholesterol and in rare cases lactose intolerance. According to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, people with intestinal damage, a weakened immune system or overgrowth of intestinal bacteria should avoid taking it.
Side Effects
Because acidophilus has not been approved by the FDA, research on efficiency and processing is minimal. Most people who take it according to the recommendations don't experience any side effects because it is found naturally in the body. Some minor side effects include abdominal discomfort, gas and a light burning sensation in the vagina (when consumed for yeast infection as a vaginal tablet).
Warning
There are emergency symptoms that should not occur as a result of taking acidophilus and may indicate an allergic reaction. These symptoms include hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek emergency help immediately. Those with artificial heart valves, severely weakened immune systems, intestinal damage or recent bowel surgery should avoid taking acidophilus.
Identification
Brand names for acidophilus include Acidophilus, Acidophilus Extra Strength, Bacid, Flora-Q, Flora-Q 2, NovaFlor, RisaQuad and Superdophilus.
