Aggrenox is the brand name of a drug that contains aspirin and dipyridamole. Aggrenox is prescribed to people who have had strokes as a preventive measure against recurring strokes and TIAs. A TIA, or transient ischemic attack, is like a "mini-stroke" that lasts a few minutes when blood flow to the brain is obstructed. Symptoms are usually less severe than those of a stroke. The medicine reduces the risk of blood clots by discouraging the platelets from sticking together. One of the most common side effects of the medication is a headache. In most cases, Aggrenox-induced headaches are mild, but some people may experience severe pain.
Step 1
Take your pill at night. Pain management guidelines established in 2004 by Boehringer Ingelheim, the maker of Aggrenox, state that taking the medication at night rather than in the morning may help prevent or reduce the pain from a headache, because you will sleep through the prime time when a headache would develop.
Step 2
Take a smaller dose of Aggrenox, under the supervision of your doctor, rather than the entire therapeutic dose. Boehringer Ingelheim's pain management guidelines report that taking a half-dose of Aggrenox (once a day instead of twice a day) and gradually working up to the full dose may prevent headaches or significantly reduce the level of pain experienced. Your doctor will develop a dosage schedule based on your symptoms and risk factors for stroke.
Step 3
Have patience when dealing with Aggrenox-induced headaches. Though this side effect is common, most often it is temporary. Many people find that their headaches diminish after their bodies adjust to the medication.
