Side Effects from Prednisone

Prednisone--known also by its brand names Meticorten, Sterapred and Sterapred DS--belongs to the corticosteroid family of drugs. Drugs.com explains that it helps prevent the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation to occur. Doctors prescribe this medication for patients with allergic disorders, ulcerative colitis, lupus, breathing disorders and skin conditions.

Insomnia

One of the more common side effects of prednisone, insomnia is a condition that produces symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep, waking too early in the morning, waking during the night and being unable to fall back to sleep, and waking in the morning not feeling fully rested. Arthur Schoenstadt, M.D. explains that when patients suffer from insomnia due to prednisone, it is because they are taking it too late in the evening. Aside from taking it earlier, patients can combat this problem by eating smaller meals within two hours of going to bed, setting a regular schedule for going to bed and taking a nap no later than 3 p.m.

Weight Gain

A long term side effect of prednisone, weight gain is a common problem among patients taking this medication. Each person gains weight in various areas of their bodies; some gain it all over, while others develop a rounder face. Prednisone can cause some people to develop fat deposits on the backs of their necks, while some gain the most around the middle. To help prevent or slow this process, patients can eat more heart healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, lean meats, poultry, fish, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Moderate physical activity for 30 minutes a day, most days of the week is also helpful.

Acne

Both Drugs.com and Dr. Arthur Schoenstadt agree that acne is yet another side effect of prednisone, but one that may subside over time. Most people, at some point in their lives, suffer from acne to some degree. It is a disease affecting the skin's oil glands, and as the pores and follicles clog with old skin cells and oil, pimples develop. These can develop virtually anywhere on the body--face, back, shoulders, neck and chest. Patients who develop acne while taking prednisone can help this condition by taking good care of their skin. Always use a mild cleanser twice a day and after heavy workouts, avoid touching the face or picking at the acne as this can cause scarring and choose makeup carefully, being sure that it is all oil-free.
