Boxers and kick boxers wear hand wraps underneath their gloves as an extra layer of protection. This thin wrap, applied over the hands and wrist, protects your hand's bones and tendons by providing compression and keeping them in place. It also keeps the wrist rigid, providing more direct, powerful punches and reducing the risk of a wrist sprain or strain. Apply this inexpensive piece of equipment correctly to obtain the maximum benefit. You'll generally only need a few attempts to get the wrapping process down.

Step 1

Thread your thumb through the thumbhole in your hand wrap, if one exists. Pinch the wrap between your thumb and the knuckle of your index finger if no thumbhole exists. Place the wrap facing away from your thumb as you start the wrap if it has a "this side up" label on one side.

Step 2

Pull the wrap down to your wrist and wrap around the joint a few times to create stability.

Step 3

Bring the wrap over the back of your hand and back between the thumb and index finger. Pull it diagonally across the middle of your palm. Bring the wrap back up the opposite side to position it to go across the knuckles.

Step 4

Wrap over the knuckles several times, placing the knuckles in the middle of the wrap for the best hold and protection and to create protection for the fingers.

Step 5

Wrap diagonally across the center of your hands to provide more support and to hold the wrap over your knuckles so it won't slip off. Continue alternating between a knuckle wrap and a diagonal hand wrap until you have only two wraps' worth of material left.

Step 6

Wrap the remaining material over your wrist. Fasten the wrap with a hook-and-loop fastener or clips, whichever method the hand wrap comes with.

Step 7

Repeat the process on your other hand.

Tips and Warnings

  • Make the wrap tight enough that it feels firm but not so tight that it cuts off blood flow in your hand.
