Effects Of Strattera

Strattera, known generically as atomoxetine, is a medication doctors prescribe to control the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. It works by affecting the chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to both hyperactivity and impulse control, according to Drugs.com. While beneficial, this medication has negative effects patients should be aware of.

Insomnia

Insomnia affects approximately 15 percent of patients taking Strattera, according to Dr. Arthur Schoenstadt. This side effect is more than having the occasional problem falling asleep. Its symptoms are consistent and can lead to problems during the day that include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, lack of energy and irritability, which is another side effect of Strattera. Signs of insomnia include finding it hard to fall asleep at night, waking up earlier than usual in the morning, waking up in the middle of the night and waking up in the morning feeling lethargic.

Constipation

Both Drugs.com and RxList says that constipation is another common, less serious side effect of Strattera. Schoenstadt defines it as passing small, hard stools fewer than three times a week. Patients taking this medication who experience this side effect find bowel movements difficult and painful, and other symptoms may include feeling bloated and uncomfortable. This is generally a temporary problem, however, if it lasts longer than a few days, patients should speak to their doctor, since a mild laxative or suppository may be necessary in the interim.

Sexual Problems

Strattera is not only a medication for children, as doctors prescribe it for teens and adults as well. Adults taking this medication may experience sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction, a loss of interest in sex or difficulty having an orgasm. Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is a condition affecting men and their ability to either achieve or maintain an erection on a regular basis. Some patients may experience a decrease in their libido and find themselves losing an interest in sex. Others experience a change in their orgasms, while some men find it difficult to ejaculate.

Weight Loss

Perhaps one of the most common side effects of this medication is weight loss. Schoenstadt states that in clinical studies, up to 16 percent of children and teens reported a loss of appetite. However, only 3 percent actually lost weight. He adds that parents should monitor their child's weight. If it appears they are losing too much, they need to report it to the doctor. Drugs.com warns that this medication is not meant for long-term use and that it can slow a child's growth when they take it long-term.
