Life can be busy and distracting, and you may find it difficult to allow your body to shut down so you can sleep restfully at night. If you're having trouble blocking out the sounds of vehicles driving down the road, or that dog barking incessantly all night long, you can introduce some white noise into your room. White noise is a sound that contains a blend of every audible frequency. All of these frequencies are evenly distributed over the frequency band, not unlike white light, notes the Astrostar website.

Step 1

Place a table fan in your room before you go to bed for the night.

Step 2

Switch your fan on "low" before going to bed. Make sure you've allowed yourself ample time to relax before your bedtime so it's easier for you to fall asleep.

Step 3

Let the "white noise" of your fan mask other noises, such as the dog barking down the street. White noise overloads your auditory system and distracts you from hearing other sounds, notes the Sleep-Disorders.org.uk. In effect, your ears can't zero in on those sounds, which allows you to relax more fully before falling asleep.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you can't get to sleep within 20 minutes, get up and find something you can do in a dim light. Once you begin to feel sleepy, shut the light out, leave your fan on and go back to sleep. Wear a sleep mask to block out all light as you sleep.

Things You'll Need

  • Table fan or ceiling fan
