Chemical treatments such as hair relaxers are a common cause for hair breakage. The relaxer process breaks down the chemical bonds in the hair shaft in order to relax the hair straight. The breakdown of the bonds makes the hair strands weaker. Hair also loses protein during the relaxer process. To stop relaxed hair from breaking, you need to replace the lost protein and strengthen the hair.
Step 1
Time your hair relaxers at least six weeks apart. The longer you wait between relaxers the more time your hair has to grow, which makes seeing the line of demarcation easier. The line of demarcation divides new growth from previously relaxed hair. Only apply relaxer to new growth.
Step 2
Treat your hair with a hard protein treatment every six weeks. Use a treatment such as Aphogee 2-step protein treatment. Apply the treatment and allow it to harden on the hair before rinsing it out. Do not manipulate the hair while it is hard so you do not cause breakage. The hard protein treatment replaces valuable protein that is lost from the hair during the relaxer process.
Step 3
Apply a mayonnaise treatment to your hair every two weeks. Generously spread mayonnaise throughout your hair. Cover your hair with a plastic cap and allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes. Rinse your hair completely clean with tepid water. This soft protein treatment strengthens relaxed hair to prevent breakage caused by daily styling.
