While dark spots on the lips are generally not serious medical conditions, new spots should be checked by a doctor or dermatologist, as some can be signs of ill health or disease. For spots not caused by a medical condition, there are some natural remedies that can help you to get rid of them. These treatments have not been tested or approved by the FDA, however, so talk with your doctor before starting any new skin care regimen.
Lemon Juice, Avocado Oil and Cedarwood Essential Oil
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of Ayurvedic Beauty Care, a mixture of natural lemon juice, avocado oil and cedarwood essential oil can be applied to the skin of the lips to help get rid of discolorations and dark spots. To make and use this remedy, combine 1 tsp. lemon juice, 4 tsp. avocado oil and ½ tsp. cedarwood essential oil in a small bottle and shake vigorously for 10 to 15 seconds to combine. Gently massage a small amount of the mixture onto the affected area for 1 to 2 minutes and leave the mixture on for 20 to 25 minutes. Rinse the area with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it doesn't irritate the skin. Unused portions can be kept in a refrigerator for one week.
Almond Oil, Lime Essential Oil, Lemon Essential Oil and Condensed Milk
According to Dorie Byers, author of Natural Beauty Basics: Create Your Own Cosmetics and Body Care Products, a mixture of almond oil, lime essential oil, lemon essential oil and condensed milk can be applied to the skin to help get rid of discolorations on the lips. To make and use this mixture, combine 1 tbsp. almond oil, 1/8 tsp. lime essential oil, 1/8 tsp. lemon essential oil and ½ tsp. condensed milk in a small bottle or jar and shake or stir to combine. Gently massage a small amount of the mixture onto the lips and leave it on for 20 to 25 minutes before rinsing the skin with water and washing with a gentle cleanser. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it does not cause any skin irritation or redness, and unused portions can be kept in a refrigerator for one week.
Olive Oil and Guarana Extract
According to Bill Gottlieb, author of Alternative Cures: More than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Home Remedies, a mixture of olive oil and guarana extract can be used as a topical treatment for dark spots on the lips. To make and use this mixture, combine six parts olive oil with one part guarana extract in a small container or bottle and stir or shake to combine. Massage a small amount of the mixture onto the skin and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off with cool water. This treatment can be repeated every day, up to twice per day as long as it doesn't bother the skin. Unused portions will keep for 30 days in a cool, dark place.
