While there are some medical topical treatments used to thicken hair--as well as surgical options, these are often invasive and expensive. However, there are some natural homemade Indian remedies for thin hair. These remedies from the tradition of Ayurvedic medicine have not been approved by the FDA, however, so talk with your doctor before starting a new treatment, even if it seems safe and natural.
Rosemary Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil and Sesame Oil
According to Vasant Lad, author of The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies, a mixture of rosemary essential oil, geranium essential oil and sesame oil can be used to thicken your hair. To make and use this mixture, combine one part rosemary essential oil, one part geranium essential oil and 10 parts sesame oil in a small container and shake or stir it to thoroughly combine the ingredients. Gently massage a small part of this mixture onto the scalp and roots of the hair and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing with water. Shampoo your hair as normal and allow it to dry naturally. This treatment can be used daily as long as it does not bother your scalp, and unused portions can be kept in a cool, dark place for up to one month.
Patchouli Oil and Avocado Oil
According to Vasant Lad, a mixture of patchouli oil and avocado oil can be used to make your hair thicker. To make this mixture, combine one part patchouli oil with ten parts avocado oil in a small container and stir to combine. Gently massage the mixture onto your wet scalp and leave it on for 20 to 25 minutes before rinsing with cool, clean water and washing with a gentle, moisturizing shampoo. This treatment can be repeated every day unless it causes irritation to the skin or scalp, and unused portions of this mixture can be kept in a cool, dark place for up to 30 days.
Fresh Mango, Cucumber and Coconut Oil
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of Ayurvedic Beauty Care, a mixture of fresh mango, cucumber and coconut oil can be applied to the scalp and roots of the hair to help make your hair thicker. To make and use this mixture, combine ½ fresh mango fruit, ¼ cucumber and 4 tbsp. coconut oil in a blender and puree on high speed for 15 to 20 seconds or until the mixture makes a uniform paste. Massage a small amount of this mixture onto your scalp and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing with clean water and washing with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be repeated once per day unless it bothers your skin or scalp. Unused portions of this mixture can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours.
