Whatever flavor you like, well, there's a balm for that. Unfortunately those balms are often filled with non-organic ingredients, chemical thickeners and additives, flavorings or colorings that you might not want to put on your face. The good news is that lip balms are easy to make at home. You can choose your own organic ingredients and experiment with your own flavor combinations to make a custom product that's both safe and fun.
Step 1
Add 6 tablespoons of organic beeswax to a double boiler and allow it to melt. Stir in 10 teaspoons of your chosen carrier oil. Remove the top of the boiler from the heat and let your wax and oil mixture cool until completely hardened.
Step 2
Test your balm's consistency. If it's too solid, re-melt the mixture and add more oil, one teaspoon at a time. If it's too glossy or oily, re-melt the mixture and add more wax, one teaspoon at a time. Continue heating and cooling until you're satisfied with your balm's texture. Write down your final measurements so you can skip this step next time.
Step 3
Melt the balm again until just melted and only slightly above room temperature. Stir in one to two teaspoons of sweetener. Stir in up to 15 drops of your organic essential oils or flavorings.
Step 4
Add a few drops of organic beet juice to add color to your gloss. Keep adding until you achieve the desired color. Skip this step if you prefer a clear balm.
Step 5
Pour into pots or tubes and allow the balm to harden until completely solid. Store in a cool place as oils will melt if stored in your pocket or a hot car.
Tips and Warnings
- Choose an organic carrier oil like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil or hemp seed oil. Evaluate different oils for feel, viscosity and aroma to determine which you prefer. Look for cold pressed oils, which are less processed, higher quality oils. Look for the words "certified organic" on the label, according to AromaWeb, not just 'organic" or "organic ingredients." Sweeteners and flavorings, like organic sugar or honey, are optional, but can improve the taste and of your balm. Organic oils, like peppermint oil can also provide a cooling sensation to lips like some commercial balms.
