While medical treatments for hair loss are widely available, they are often expensive and come with a long list of potential side effects. However, there are some Indian home remedies for hair loss, mostly based around Ayurvedic medicine and beauty care, that may help to stop the process. These treatments have not been tested and approved by the FDA however, so talk with your doctor before starting any sort of new treatment, even if it seems safe and natural.
Coconut Cream, Carrot Seed Essential Oil and Jojoba Oil
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care," a mixture of coconut cream, carrot seed essential oil and jojoba oil can be applied to the scalp as a topical treatment for hair loss. To make and use this mixture, combine 1/8 cup coconut cream, ½ tsp. carrot seed essential oil and 2 tbsp. jojoba oil in a small container and shake vigorously to combine the ingredients. Pour the mixture onto your wet scalp and gently massage it on for two to three minutes. Rinse your hair with cool, clean water and wash with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as it does not cause any irritation or skin problems. Unused portions will keep in the refrigerator for seven days.
Aloe Vera Gel, Lemon Juice and Mango Juice
According to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies," aloe vera gel, lemon juice and mango juice can be used as a topical treatment for hair loss. To make and use this mixture, combine 2 tbsp. aloe vera gel, 2 tbsp. lemon juice and quarter peeled, sliced mango in a blender and puree on high speed for 10 to 15 seconds or until it has an even consistency. Gently massage the mixture onto the scalp in the shower or bathtub and leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water and washing with your regular shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be used once per day unless it bothers your scalp. Unused portions of this mixture can be stored in the refrigerator for up to five days if necessary.
Wheat Germ and Castor Oil
According to Lad, a mixture of wheat germ and castor oil can be applied to the scalp to help treat hair loss. To use this remedy, combine 1 tbsp. wheat germ with 3 tbsp. castor oil and stir to combine. Gently massage the mixture onto your wet scalp and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes with a towel around your neck to prevent the mixture from dripping on your skin and clothes. Rinse the mixture off with cool water and wash with a gentle shampoo and conditioner. This treatment can be repeated daily, and unused portions can be kept in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
