Alopecia is an often embarrassing condition that causes hair loss in both men and women. The condition can also lead to a sensitive, irritated and itchy scalp. There are two primary types of alopecia: alopecia areata, which happens when the body' s immune system attacks hair follicles, resulting in hair loss, and androgenetic alopecia, which is an inherited form of hair loss. Natural remedies may help combat symptoms of the condition.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC, can aid in treating the effects of alopecia. The herb has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that neutralize toxins while enabling cell growth. Milk thistle also soothes irritated skin and moistens mucous membranes. According to the UMMC, people suffering from alopecia should take from 80 to 160 mg of milk thistle seed up to three times a day.

Sesame Oil Therapy

Sesame oil, a common food ingredient found at most grocery stores, also doubles as a treatment for an itchy, sore scalp. According to the Times of Indiana website, the treatment works best if applied at bedtime. First, massage scalp with sesame oil, then wrap a warm cloth or a towel around scalp for up to 10 minutes before washing your hair. According to the site, you can also substitute sesame oil with lime juice and vinegar. Rub lime juice mixed with vinegar on the scalp, then wash and rinse hair. Use this remedy up to two times weekly.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Colloidal oatmeal, also known as Avena sativa, provides comfort for scratchy, dry and itchy skin. The oatmeal is not the same as edible oatmeal, and should only be used externally. According to the Colloidal Oatmeal website, colloidal oatmeal works best when mixed with water to create a milky dispersion. The ointment can then be coated on the scalp before a bath or shower to moisturize, soften and protect skin. Remember to wash the oatmeal completely off scalp after 10 to 15 minutes. Colloidal oatmeal, according to the website, also works great to soothe conditions such as psoriasis, acne, bug bites, sunburns and other minor skin irritation such as chicken pox, poison ivy and poison oak.
