Many downhill skiers love the thrill of the hill, but hate the price of the lift ticket. In fact, if you don't live near the slopes, lift, lodging and transportation can get expensive. If the high cost of downhill skiing is limiting your slope time and impeding your skill improvement, cross country skiing is a viable alternative. Nordic skiing slopes are usually more accessible, and trail fees are cheaper than lift tickets. While alpine and Nordic skiing are different sports, there is some carryover between the two techniques.

The Skate

Step 1

Find a flat, groomed section of a Nordic ski track.

Step 2

Spread your skis apart and make a "V" shape. Your skis should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.

Step 3

Shift your weight to the big toe of your right foot, placing your right ski on its inside edge. Remain on edge as you push your right ski, lifting it from the ground. Simultaneously glide forward on your right ski. Repeat with your left ski. The skating move helps downhill skiers keep their momentum on flat slopes and cat tracks.

Parallel Turn

Step 1

Stand at the top of the hill with your feet in a parallel position.

Step 2

Tap the snow with one pole. Plant the pole a few inches in front of one ski.

Step 3

Pivot your skis in the direction of the pole touch. Complete the turn by pivoting back to the fall line. This parallel turning technique does not place the skis on edge. This makes it effective training for cross-training method for alpine mogul and powder skiing, which are performed using a flat ski.

Tips and Warnings

  • The skating technique requires one-legged balance. Practice dryland one-legged squats to improve your balance. Skate-specific skis and boots will make it easier to learn the skating technique.
  • Nordic skiing is more aerobic than downhill skiing. Avoid overdressing.
