The Proactiv skin care line is one of the most popular non-prescription acne treatments available on the market. The system was developed by two dermatologists: Dr. Kathy Fields and Dr. Katie Rodan. The key ingredient in Proactiv is benzoyl peroxide, a potent medicine that kills the P. acnes bacteria that causes pimples. With regular use, Proactiv has proven effective in treating mild to moderate acne in teens and adults.

Step 1

Splash some warm water on your face to dampen skin. Massage a dime-sized amount of the Proactiv Renewing Cleanser all over your face for at least one full minute, concentrating on problem areas. Rinse the product off with warm water and dry your face.

Step 2

Put a dime-sized amount of the Proactiv Revitalizing Toner onto a cotton pad and gently apply all over your face. Wait a few minutes for the toner to dry and do not wash off.

Step 3

Apply a pea-sized amount of the Proactiv Repairing Treatment directly onto the pimples and other acne-prone areas, like the T-zone or cheeks. Do not wash off.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do all of the above three steps in order every morning and night. It may take about two weeks to a month before you notice visible results. Use sunscreen every day while using Proactiv, as certain ingredients may increase your skin's sun sensitivity.
  • Benzoyl peroxide may bleach hair or fabric, so use with caution. While using Proactiv, your skin may become red or flaky. If you notice allergic reactions, stop use of this product and contact your dermatologist.
