Signs & Symptoms of Cancer of the Lungs

Lung cancer is often not diagnosed until it is too late to be cured. However, there are some signs and symptoms of lung cancer that can help doctors detect the disease early so that prompt treatment can be given. These signs and symptoms affect the respiratory system and can affect other body parts when the cancer progresses.

Shortness of Breath

Doctors from Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego, list shortness of breath as one of the major symptoms of lung cancer. This is caused by a blockage of air flow in the lung or the buildup of fluid within the lung. Shortness of breath can also be caused by the spread of a tumor within the lung.

Chest Pain

According to physicians from VCU Massey Cancer Center, one symptom of lung cancer is constant chest pain. This chest pain may be caused by the spread of a lung tumor or by the pressure exerted on the lungs by the buildup of fluid. Physicians from Moores Cancer Center indicate that this pain is often made worse by laughing, coughing or taking a deep breath.

Coughing

Coughing can be a symptom of many minor illnesses, provided the cough does not last for a long period of time. According to physicians from the University of Maryland Medical Center, a persistent cough that gets worse with time can be considered a symptom of lung cancer. Coughing that produces blood is an even greater cause for concern.

Wheezing & Hoarseness

Medical professionals from Moores Cancer Center list wheezing and hoarseness as two major symptoms of lung cancer. Wheezing and hoarseness can be caused by inflammation of the lung tissue or blockage in the lungs that can be caused by lung cancer.

Infections

Persistent infections are another sign of lung cancer. According to medical experts from the University of Maryland Medical Center, repeated bouts of bronchitis and pneumonia can be a sign of lung cancer. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) defines bronchitis as a condition in which the tubes that carry air to the lungs become inflamed. NHLBI defines pneumonia as an infection in the lungs.

Changes in Weight & Appetite

Like other forms of cancer, lung cancer can cause changes in a person's weight and appetite level. According to physicians from Moores Cancer Center, unexplained weight loss and a decrease in appetite are known symptoms of lung cancer.

Swelling

VCU Massey Cancer Center lists swelling of the face and neck as a sign of lung cancer. This swelling can be caused by a tumor that presses on the blood vessels near the lung. This swelling can become painful if it persists.

Shoulder Pain

Physicians from VCU Massey Cancer Center indicate that pain in the shoulder, arm or hand can be a symptom of lung cancer. This type of pain is caused by tumors near the lung. These tumors exert pressure on the nerves, resulting in pain and discomfort.
