Comparison of Cycling Shoes

Cycling shoes offer you a comfortable and efficient ride. A good cycling shoe has a hard sole to support and protect your feet as you cycle. Some shoes have clips on the sole, allowing you to clip into the pedal and engage more muscles as you pedal, while others are clipless. Specific cycling shoes are necessary for different disciplines of cycling.

Road Bike Shoes

Road bike cycling shoes will generally have Velcro and adjustable tightening systems designed to hold your feet securely and comfortably in the shoe. The Sidi Ergo 2 shoe, for instance, has a lower Velcro strap, a middle nylon string strap with a comfort tightening system, and a plastic, adjustable ratchet top strap. The Shimano SH-R215B also has three closures: two Velcro and one adjustable buckle.

Mountain Bike Shoes

A mountain bike shoe is similar to a road bike shoe, but the sole is different to accommodate running. These shoes have built-in studs for grip in difficult terrain and the center of the sole has fittings for a clipless pedal for off roading. The Adidas AdiStar XC Ultra is a mountain bike shoe recommended by BikeCyclingReviews.com.

Winter Shoes

A Winter cycling shoe is like a boot that covers the ankle for warmth as you ride. These shoes typically use Gore-Tex, fleece and/or sheep’s wool for warmth. The Sidi Diablo Winter cycling shoe is made of Gore-Tex.

Indoor Cycling Shoes

Most road bike shoes work fine on indoor cycles. If you choose a shoe with a clip, most Shimano clips are compatible with the bikes. Unlike shoes for other forms of cycling, you can walk in most of these shoes with a fair bit of comfort. The Shimano SH-WF23 is a good model for women, and the Shimano FN22 Indoor Cycling Shoe is a good one for men.

Triathlon Shoes

As a triathlete you need to able to transition from one event to the next quickly. That's why the Shimano TR50 line of shoes have one big Velcro strap for security, and a loop on the back of the shoe to pull your foot in and out before and after events.
