Approximately 40 million to 50 million Americans suffer from acne, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Acne can make people uncomfortable and discouraged, while taking away their confidence. Severe acne often leaves scars. However, various over-the-counter and prescribed products can help in reducing and removing acne scars.

Isotretinoin

Isotretinoin, also called accutane, treats scarring acne and acne that will not respond to other medication. It is reserved for the most severe kinds of acne, according to the Mayo Clinic. Isotretinoin is only available by prescription. If you begin taking isotretinoin, your dermatologist will monitor you for any side effects.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide, an over-the-counter product, helps to reduce the bacteria that causes acne, remove dead skin cells in order to prevent acne lesions and reduce the appearance of acne scars. The American Academy of Dermatology says that principal side effect of the peroxide is dry skin, so it's best not to use too much, unless directed by a physician. The chemical may also bleach clothes, so ensure you are careful when applying it.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid treats non-inflammatory acne lesions that may cause acne scars and helps in correcting the shedding of skin cells. It also helps to unclog pores and prevent lesions from occurring. Once you use this product, it's important to continuously apply it, as if you do not, the acne may return, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dermabrasion

Dermatologists use dermabrasion to treat the most severe acne scars. This process involves removing the top layer of skin with a rapidly rotating wire brush. Surface scars may not completely be removed, but they will appear less noticeable when the process is complete.

Tissue Fillers

Dermatologists can inject collagen or fat under the skin and scars in order to stretch the skin, making the scars less noticeable. Results are temporary, so you must continue to periodically inject the collagen or fat.
