Adverse Side Effects of Zegerid

Zegerid is a combination medication which contains both omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate. Omeprazole is in a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors which works by decreasing the amount of hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach. Sodium bicarbonate works to neutralize acid in the stomach to make omeprazole more efficient. Zegerid is used to treat intestinal ulcers, stomach ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease and erosive esophagitis. There are some side effects associated with Zegerid.

Headache

Patients taking Zegerid may experience headache. According to the manufacturer, about 2 percent of patients have experienced headache while taking Zegerid. This side effect may diminish over time as the body adjusts to daily Zegerid use. Patients may ask their physicians if the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen is safe to take for the occasional relief of headache pain and discomfort. A headache that worsens or persists should be brought to the attention of a health care provider.

Stomach Discomfort

Stomach discomfort may occur while taking Zegerid. About 2 percent of users report nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation. It is recommended to take Zegerid on an empty stomach at least one hour prior to eating a meal to receive the full benefits of this medication. Patients who experience stomach discomfort may find it helpful to adhere to a bland diet and eat smaller meals spaced frequently throughout the day. An increase in daily fruit, vegetable, fiber and water intake may help to diminish constipation.

Mild Fever and Aches

Some patients may develop mild fever and body aces while taking Zegerid. These side effects may be temporary and diminish over time as the body adjusts to Zegerid. Mild fever and aches may be relieved by warm heat or massage.

Severe Effects

In rare cases, patients may develop a severe side effect while taking this medication. Symptoms can include easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness, or a fast, slow or uneven heartbeat, explains Drugs.com. Patients who have experienced an allergic reaction to omeprazole or any proton pump inhibitor should speak to their physicians prior to taking Zegerid.
