Cleansing your colon can remove harmful toxins and chemicals from your body as well as regulate your digestive system. There are many over-the-counter remedies for cleansing the colon, but some can be harsh on your system. At home colon cleansing remedies work with the body's natural functioning, allowing for safer and less harmful results.
The Master Cleanse
The Master Cleanse is a home colon cleanse remedy that is also used for weight loss. The Master Cleanse was created by Dr. Stanley Boroughs as a way to detoxify the colon and improve the overall health of the digestive system. The regime is broken down into three phases: the Ease-In, the Lemonade Diet and the Ease Out. During the Lemonade Diet, a mixture of water, lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper is consumed up to 12 times a day. This phase induces a major colon flush in your body. Your bowels will be completely evacuated, providing relief for any digestive issue you may have.
Water
Drinking water is another simple home remedy for cleansing the colon. Not drinking enough water can cause bloating, constipation and prevent your digestive system from working properly. Drinking more water will flush harmful toxins from your colon, improving your overall health. Barbara Levine, director of the Nutrition Information Center at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, recommends drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water. For example, a person weighing 150 lbs. should drink 75 oz. of water daily.
Fiber
Eating more fiber is a simple way to cleanse the colon. Raw vegetables and fruits regulate your digestive system and fight many ailments associated with a poorly working colon, such as bloating, gas and diarrhea. Adding more fiber to your diet also aids in weight loss because fiber makes you feel fuller longer, thus reducing the number of calories you need to consume throughout the day. The USDA recommends 38 grams of fiber a day for men and 25 grams of fiber a day for women.
High Water Enema
A high water enema cleanses the colon by reaching areas of the bowels missed by over-the-counter laxatives or enemas. The high water enema removes any harmful chemicals and toxins as it passes water through the anus into the colon, completely flushing your system. Water isn't the only fluid you can use to clean your colon. Coffee is often used in place of water because it boosts the amount of bile removed from your colon.
