Losing weight gradually through proper diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight. A healthy weight loss is between one and two pounds per week but some people may want to see results quicker. Unfortunately, there are many weight-loss gimmicks, fad diets and products with false promises. These forms of weight loss will cause drastic weight loss in a short period of time but will have harmful side effects.
Starvation
Starvation is completely different from fasting. Controlled fasting lasts a certain amount of time, after which the person returns to the normal eating habits. Also, you should not be exercising when fasting. Starvation is self-inflicted food deprivation that causes many eating disorders, such as anorexia. Starvation causes your body to stop or slow certain bodily functions due to lack of calories. In fact, Ask The Trainer notes that the body is malnourished because it is deficient the essential nutrients to function properly.
Fad Diets
Fad diets are popular weight loss plans that usually focus around eating one food or excluding a particular food group. This is an unhealthy plan because our bodies need a balance of all food groups. This type of dieting can cause weight loss but will result in weight gain once the diet is ceased.
Smoking
Research shows that people who smoke cigarettes have an increased metabolic rate, which results in appetite suppression, notes Steady Health. The negatives of smoking heavily outweigh the benefits. In fact, smoking is responsible for 85 percent of all lung cancer cases.
Saunas and Sweat Suits
People have been using saunas and sweat suits for many years to lose weight. However, these weight-loss gimmicks just cause you to lose water weight which can be dangerous if overdone. Dehydration and dizziness are side effects that can be experienced when using a sauna or exercising with a sweat suit.
Abuse of Laxatives
Laxatives are a common source of quick weight loss. The idea behind laxatives aiding in weight loss is to avoid the food being absorbed by the body by creating a bowel movement. However, the body will absorb the food before the laxative can do its just and forces it to travel through your system at a higher rate. This does not allow your body to absorb the nutrients and results in loss of water weight.
