According to "The Science of Hair Care," castor oil can be used to treat dry ends because it is a fixed oil, which means that it does not evaporate. Castor oil can be safely used as often as possible, though "Hair and Hair Care" recommends using castor oil twice per week to treat split ends and once per week to maintain healthy, shiny hair.
Step 1
Rinse your hair and then gently towel dry it. According to "Hair and Hair Care," it is best to squeeze the water out of your hair with the towel as opposed to using a scrubbing motion, which can break and damage hair.
Step 2
Pour 1/2 cup of castor oil if you have thin hair or 1 cup castor oil if you have thick hair into a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the castor oil for 30 seconds. The castor oil should be warm to the touch. If it is not warm after 30 seconds, continue to microwave the castor oil in 15 second increments until it is warm to the touch.
Step 3
Divide your hair into four to six sections with hair clips. According to "Hair Care: An Illustrated Dermatologic Handbook," four sections of hair is usually easy to work with if you have thin hair. If you have thick hair, five or six sections may be easier to work with.
Step 4
Dip a cosmetic brush into the warm castor oil. Apply the castor oil with the cosmetic brush to the ends of your hair.
Step 5
Blow dry your hair on a low heat setting. According to "Hair and Hair Care," high heat settings can damage hair, but blow drying on a low heat setting is sufficient to increase the effectiveness of the castor oil.
Step 6
Wash your hair as usual until all of the castor oil has been washed out of your hair. You may have to wash your hair twice to achieve this result.
