According to "Cosmetic Dermatology: Principles and Practice," a variety of types of vinegar can be used to treat acne, but apple cider vinegar is the most effective type of vinegar in treating acne. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic and alpha-hydroxy acids that kill bacteria and dry out acne. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," most acne can be treated at home with apple cider vinegar in about six-weeks time. If after six weeks you have not achieved your desired results, visit a dermatologist to review your treatment options.

Step 1

Combine 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar with 1/3 cup distilled water in a bowl. According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," apple cider vinegar should be applied nightly to blemishes for the best results.

Step 2

Saturate a cotton ball in the apple cider mixture. Apply the mixture directly to your acne. Use a new cotton ball for each blemish. According to "Handbook of Dermatology: A Practical Manual," using a single cotton ball to treat more than one blemish could spread bacteria, causing additional acne.

Step 3

Mix 1 tbsp. bentonite clay with 2 tbsp. apple cider to create a thick paste once per week. According to "Braun-Falco's Dermatology," bentonite clay mixed with apple cider vinegar is a potent acne treatment.

Step 4

Dab the paste over your blemishes. Leave the paste on your face for 20 minutes, or until it dries.

Step 5

Wash off the paste with cool water.
